An armed individual, who had taken hostages at the head office of carmaker BMW near Paris, has surrendered, reports say.

The hostage situation began on Monday afternoon at the offices of BMW France in Montigny-Le-Bretonneux, not far from the French capital, police sources say.

Police were deployed at the scene.

It was not clear what the motive for the hostage taking was, although some reports said it was being carried out by a former employee.
