LEIPZIG, Germany — BMW said it will invest $560 million over the next three years at its production facility here to build a variety of new electric vehicles, including the ActiveE in 2011 and the Megacity in 2013, plus another $180 million to make EV components and materials.

The plant expansion in Leipzig will make it the first location in Germany to handle the large-scale production of electric cars, BMW said.

The ActiveE is based on the BMW 1 Series Coupe and was unveiled as a concept earlier this year at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The four-passenger concept featured an advanced lithium-ion battery pack developed with SB LiMotive, a battery joint venture formed by Samsung and Bosch. BMW said the Concept ActiveE’s electric motor produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, with a range of 100 miles, a top speed of 90 mph and 0-60-mph acceleration in less than 9.0 seconds.
